At about 12 miles off the coast of the Gargano are Tremiti Islands, defined by their charming and unspoilt beauty as "the pearl of the Adriatic".
The small archipelago is made up of the islands of San Nicola, San Domino, Cretaccio, Caprara, and about 11 miles from them, from the island of Pianosa. The crystal clear waters of the Tremiti attract thousands of tourists every year.
St. Nicholas is the historical, religious and administrative center of the archipelago. For many traces of an ancient and glorious past, it is considered an open air museum. The island measures 42 hectares, has a coastline of 3,700 meters, a length of 1,600 meters and a maximum height of m. 75.
San Domino is largely covered with forests of Aleppo pine, for fertility and spontaneity of flowers of every color, was called by the Benedictine Monks' Garden of Paradise. " The waters are clear, the coast is indented with coves, points and reefs, wonderful are the rock of the Elephant, its form and Pagliai, pyramid-shaped monoliths resembling real haystacks. Touring the archipelago by boat, you can visit, among other things, the Grotta delle Viole, Bue Marino and the Swallows.
In San Domino are the beaches of Cala delle Arene, Cala Matano and the beach under the Pagliai, you come to it only by sea.
The island covers 207 hectares, has a coastal line of 9700 meters, a length of 2,600 meters and a maximum height of m. 116 to the tip of the Chapel of the Hermit.
Cretaccio is a rock mass of yellow clay and its nature is disappearing for the relentless corrosion of atmospheric and marine ecosystems. The island is 3.5 hectares, has a height of 30 meters and a coastline of 1,300 meters, 20 meters is the rock of old.
Caprara (or Capraia or Capperaia), uninhabited but is interesting as the others, the tip of the lighthouse has a great Architiello of architectural nature. The island is 45 hectares wide, 1,600 meters long, has a coastline of 4,700 meters. A 22 km away stands the island of Pianosa, expanded 11.4 hectares, is an evolution of 1.700 km of coastline and a maximum height of 15 meters, which is partially flooded with water. The island has no vegetation and is uninhabited.
Islands quakes are reachable by boat from Rhodes, Peschici, Vieste and Manfredonia (FG).
