6 December 1991 was established the National Park of Gargano. A park is neither created nor invented: it simply recognizes that a particular territory has special characteristics in need of protection. And Gargano has many reasons to be safeguarded. It represents an extraordinary mosaic of biological and environmental situations concentrated in a restricted area. On this island biodiversity, surrounded by sea and from the tabletop, there is a very high level of biodiversity on this 0.7% of the country is about 33% of plant species and Italian are reproduced 170 of 237 species of birds nested in Italy. This exceptional richness comes from the variety of ecosystems that are followed that make the Spur of Italy an area naturally "suited" to be a National Park. Many of the 2,000 plant species are endemic to the Gargano (exclusive) of the territory and very rare. One is unique in Italy is represented by the presence of beech shares very low (less than 300 m). This tree species is favored by the particular climate of Gargano that provides abundant precipitation in late spring. The beech Garganica vegetation below the "normal" 800 m, are called beech depressed. The Beech is the heart of the Forest Umbra, but here as elsewhere it is associated with the presence of lime trees, maples, Cerri, Lecce, Carpini, Olmi, taxes ... Very often, these species are characterized by a rise out of the ordinary (macrosomatismo) and many of them are centuries old: it is the case with many rates and beech Umbria and known Leccio of the Capuchin Convent of Vico. There are also numerous species of undergrowth: cyclamen, violas, holly, hawthorn, wild apple trees, ivy ... Gargano endemic plants are, among others, the Scabosa Dallaporta of the Inula candida, the Campanula Gargano, the cysts concluded. Significant presence of Orchids: there are almost 100 species.
